Doctorate ACS

Job offer – we are recruiting one Ph.D. candidate supported by Norway Grants (UEFISCDI) to work in the project Efficient Learning and Optimization Tools for Hyperspectral Imaging Systems (ELO-Hyp) on optimization methods for machine learning with applications in hyperspectral imaging.

Date: 05.07.2020

1 PhD position available at University Politehnica Bucharest

We are recruiting 1 PhD candidate supported by Norway Grants (UEFISCDI) to work in the project Efficient Learning and Optimization Tools for Hyperspectral Imaging Systems (ELO-Hyp) on optimization methods for machine learning with applications in hyperspectral imaging.

Description of the project. In this project new optimization algorithms will be designed and their computational performance assessed for large-scale optimization problems, based on the structure present in the problem, such as data structure or structure in the objective function and based on different models of computations, such as parallel or distributed computing. To obtain scalable algorithms, stochastic framework will be combined with fast optimization schemes such as higherorder methods. Then, these numerical optimization methods will be combined with machine learning techniques for processing hyperspectral images. The phd student will work in close collaboration with the Control Group from university NTNU (Norway) and Coltea Hospital (Romania) for processing hyperspectral images arising in ocean monitoring and medical imaging. He/she will also visit NTNU (Norway) for 3 months to work on a real application related to ocean monitoring.

Requirements:

We are looking for candidates with strong mathematical and computations skills (optimization, linear algebra, calculus, matlab/python) to work on theoretical and algorithmic projects at the interface between optimization, machine learning and image processing. The position is for 3 years and is available immediately (before September 2020). Interested candidates are invited to send:

  • half-page cover letter motivating your interest and suitability for the position
  • detailed CV including research experience and any previous publications
  • transcripts of academic records indicating courses taken (including grades); please indicate also the optimization courses you attend and a short description.
  • half-page summary of your MSc thesis
  • contact details of two relevant references (email, phone number)

by email at the email address: ion.necoara@acse.pub.ro.

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates must –at the date of recruitment (September 2020)– (i) have obtained the MSc degree entitling you to embark on a doctorate; (ii) be within the first five years of your research career (i.e. after finishing master).

Conditions of employment:

The PhD students will work in the group of Professor Ion Necoara (https://acse.pub.ro/person/ionnecoara/), that belongs to the Automatic Control and Systems Engineering Department, University Politehnica Bucharest, Romania. This is full position and the gross salary will be about 1.300 euro.

For     more     information     about     the     project,     please     contact     Prof.     Ion     Necoara
