Doctorate ACS

Students in Ph.D. programs

The cycle of doctorate university study is organized by the SD_AC in two stages which are obligatory for all Ph.D. students:
  • The learning program based on advanced university studies with a duration of 3 months; this program must be completed by Ph.D. students in their first year of the doctoral study;
  • The individual scientific research program with duration of 5 semesters.

The learning program based on advanced university studies is based on an individual learning plan which is defined by the scientific coordinator together with the Advisory team for each Ph.D. student; this plan includes one or more courses and individual learning activities. The student’s learning plan is approved by the SD_AC Council and is validated by CSUD.

Each individual learning plan specifies the following types of obligatory activities that must be performed by the Ph.D. student in a time interval of 3 months as readiness program:

  1. Attending one or more courses established by the scientific coordinator for the Ph.D. student, that can be:
    • A course especially created by the scientific coordinator for a doctoral research domain she/he directs and teaches in the SD_AC;
    • A semester course of the master program of the Automatic Control and Computers faculty within UPB or other faculties in UPB or in other universities in the country or abroad;
    • A compact course module (concentrated in a short time interval) existing in master program running in the faculty of Automatic Control and Computers within UPB or other faculties in UPB or in other universities in the country or abroad.
  2. Performing an individual study program: analysing journal articles in a particular research domain, conference papers, monograph or book chapters, and patents recommended to the Ph.D. students by the scientific coordinator or realizing a specialty study in the doctorate thesis’ domain.

Optionally, the Ph.D. student may replace, with the approval of the scientific coordinator, the course activities with her / his participation at: (1) scientific and technical presentations and keynote talks on international scientific events (scientific workshop, conference, symposium, congress) having the theme in the thesis’ domain; (2) summer schools, exploratory workshops, specialization programs in advanced technologies / development tools organized by universities and / or well-known companies with profile in the doctorate domain (SE and CIT).

The learning program based on advanced university studies is concluded through an examination carried out by each Ph.D. student in front of the Advisory team; the student gets an evaluation which will be mentioned in her / his SD_AC file “Learning program based on advanced university studies”. Obtaining the evaluation “admitted” is needed to get 30 ECTS and allows continuing the doctorate study program. The examination validating the learning program based on advanced university studies can be repeated a single time after which, in case of failure, the student’s doctorate program is closed.

The individual scientific research program is carried out by the Ph.D. student in 5 stages, and may include her / his participation in one or more scientific projects established by the scientific coordinator, the thesis being close related to the project’s subject.

The Ph.D. student presents every 6 months a Scientific Report which must demonstrate the progress accumulated in her / his individual research program. These semester Scientific Reports are sustained by the Ph.D. student in the SD_AC in front of her / his scientific coordinator, of the Advisory team and of other members of the SD_AC who may be invited by the thesis director.

The result of evaluating each Scientific Report is either ”accept” or ”reject”, and conditions the continuation of the university doctorate study for each Ph.D. student; for each accepted Scientific Report the student receives 30 ECTS. In case a scientific activity report is rejected, the Ph.D. student is allowed to review and improve it for a second and last presentation, within 3 months from the first presentation. The doctorate program will be interrupted and closed in one of the following situations:

  • A Scientific Report is rejected a second time;
  • A second Scientific Report is rejected.

SD_AC recommends the following framework for the content of the doctorate Thesis, which must be realized by the Ph.D. student at a high quality level, with original contributions during the individual scientific research programs:

  • The context and justification of the research include: the context of research; the applicability area; the problems approached; the work hypotheses and constraints; the global objective.
  • The analysis of existing ww state of the art in the domain of the thesis includes: the analysis methods; the results of the analysis; the limitations relative to the proposed global objective.
  • The specific objectives proposed for the doctorate research include: the research problems; the results to be obtained; the specifications for objective fulfilment.
  • The elements used to reach the proposed objectives include: the research methodology; the implementing framework; the development of models, architectures, platforms, hardware and software systems, and interfaces.
  • The verification and validation elements include: the experimental scenarios and protocols; the results obtained; the critical analysis of results; demonstrating the achievement of the objectives.
  • The synthesis, conclusions and future development perspectives include: the report of results obtained; the limits of the research carried out; the continuation perspectives; the scientific contributions brought and the elements of originality; the bibliography studied; the report of scientific production and applied research (publications, communication of results, patenting, implementing).
